Parenting Support

What kind of parenting support do we provide?

Raising children is challenging, even overwhelming at times – even for child therapists! And as a parent, knowing what to do is not always automatic or instinctive. The relationships we had with our parents are often mirrored in our relationships with our children and most of the time it’s unconscious. We can often get stuck in old ways of relating that neither feel good nor represent how we would like to be.

Learning to communicate effectively with your child is a crucial part of having a healthy and ongoing relationship with them. For parents who are struggling to understand their child’s behaviours and are looking for a better way to connect and create a harmonious family household, you’ve come to the right place.

We support families through a range of parental guidance counselling and coaching services that are designed to empower parents and promote conscious parenting or mindful parenting. Our goal is to help parents become the best versions of themselves, improve their psychological wellbeing and feel good about their role so that they can feel confident in nurturing compassionate, independent and resilient children.

The methods employed by our specially trained and experienced child play therapists are evidenced-based, backed by trauma, attachment and neuroscience research on the developing brain of the child. As part of our parenting support, we offer a range of  supports in the form of:

  • Parent education and/or coaching
  • Parent child therapy (Filial Therapy)
  • Parenting programs & workshops

Our parent support approach resources parents/caregivers and enhances their toolkit to better understand what is driving their children’s behaviours, feel more confident in responding effectively towards challenging behaviours, while at the same time, preserving the relationship between parents and children. By creating new connections in your child’s developing brain, they will develop strong emotional and social skills that will serve them now and throughout their entire life.

Throughout our sessions together

We’ll focus on building communication skills that are responsive and encouraging to strengthen the connection with your child and foster healthy brain development.

We’ll also look at finding solutions for problematic behaviour by understanding the child’s underlying needs and feelings driving the behaviour in the first place. We are here to help you to:

  • Regain control and feel empowered as a parent
  • Help you communicate more effectively
  • Help your child develop self-control and resilience
  • Help your child build confidence and independence
  • Increase understanding of your child’s emotional needs
  • Help develop empathy in your child

With the knowledge of the science behind brain development, we can keep in mind the importance of our children’s earliest years and promote healthy attachment by providing our children with responsive parenting and nurturing experiences.

Testimonials

Here’s what our clients had to say about their children and our Play Therapy Melbourne:

Children’s therapy centre

We began play therapy hoping that it would be an effective way of breaking the difficult cycle that I was in with my son. Our play therapist, Mardi, has a beautiful manner with our son and we have valued her insightful observations about what may be underlying his behaviours.

Danielle (Mother)
Filial Therapy Melbourne Testimonial

The combination of the play therapy and implementing her simple strategies has been very effective in changing things at home. We have found play therapy to be very beneficial for our family and are now undertaking filial therapy to continue to reap the rewards of the play therapy approach.

Natalie is fun, bright and bubbly. Through Play Therapy, she was easily able to connect with my child and we cannot believe how much he has transformed from being an anxious and unsure little boy, into the settled, confident and social child he is now.

Emma (Parent)

My child has a trauma background. He’s getting the Play therapy for about 9 months now. I can’t not thank Helen enough for her help and support . It’s been a very hard journey but the result is amazing. He has got great control on his emotions. He is a happy boy now 🙂

Donna’s play therapy & animal assisted therapy work has been instrumental in supporting & developing an understanding of the underlying issues of our disengaged refugee students. Her expertise has also been welcomed by staff who needed insight in engaging & developing strategies to meet the needs of our highly challenging students.
